The theme of my exhibition is based around empathy and represents the voices of the people who have come into my life and have made an impact on me personally as an artist. Everyone has their own unique stories although we all have similar fears like wanting to be accepted and loved for who we are on the inside and not to be judged by what we look like on the outside.

To show empathy we must understand before we judge as empathy is seeing through the eyes of another, listening through the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another and to be able to walk in their shoes as if you have also trodden the same life path.

The portraits that I have painted for my first solo exhibition range from family members to people I have met on the streets, but they all have one common theme which has stood out for me and that is that they have been looked down on because of their perceived weaknesses or disabilities or where they have felt that the world has sometimes turned its the back on them. They just want to be seen as ordinary people. So next time you see a beggar on the street or someone walking around acting a bit crazy, don’t just walk past as quick as you can to avoid them. Spare them a thought of what they might have gone through in their lives and that you feel for them and their situation. You show them a bit of empathy ...
